Patterns, Paper & Self-Portraits

A collage workshop inspired by Klara Vanzella Yang's exhibition Repetition and Rupture

Have you ever wanted to make a self-portrait but weren't sure where to begin?

In this fun, hands-on workshop, artist and art educator Alex Warrender will introduce participants to simple pattern-making techniques using paint, pastels, markers, and other art materials. You'll create your own collection of bold, handmade patterned papers before transforming them into a colourful collage self-portrait through cutting, layering, and composition.

Inspired by Klara Vanzella Yang's exhibition Repetition and Rupture, the workshop explores how repeated marks and patterns can be reimagined into something entirely new. As your individual patterns come together to form a portrait, you'll discover how repetition, experimentation, and play can become tools for personal expression.

No previous art experience is necessary - just a willingness to experiment, create, and have fun.

When: Sunday – August 9, 2026 - 2-4pm

Where: Underscore Projects - 1468 Dundas St W - 2nd floor - Toronto, ON M6J 1Y6 (Dundas/Dufferin) (Please note that the gallery space is accessible only by stairs)

What you will make: A unique collage self-portrait created from your own handmade patterned papers and a variety of colourful collage materials.

Workshop Details 

• Duration of 2 hours
• Recommended for 10+ (children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian throughout the workshop)
• Please wear clothes that you don't mind getting a little messy - you'll be working with paint and other art materials.

Alex Warrender is an artist, art educator, and art therapy student interested in the intersection of therapeutic art, art for social change, and traditional fine art practices. She collaborates with galleries, institutions, and public spaces across Toronto, facilitating creative experiences that deepen curiosity, imagination, and agency.
