The joys and challenges of being an immigrant
What does it mean to build a life far from home? How does immigration shape our emotions, identity, and sense of belonging?
Join us at Underscore Projects for a screening of Jean Charles, followed by an open and welcoming conversation about the joys and challenges of the immigrant experience.
Facilitated by Celina Bernardes, a clinical psychologist and psychotherapist with over 20 years of experience in mental health and a background in immigration studies, this gathering offers a space to reflect, share experiences, and connect with others who understand what it means to live between countries and cultures.
The film screening and discussion will be in Portuguese, creating space to express ourselves and connect in our own language.
When: Saturday - November 7, 2026 - 2:30-5:30pm (doors open at 2 PM; please arrive by 2:15 PM)
Where: Underscore Projects - 1468 Dundas St W - 2nd floor - Toronto, ON M6J 1Y6 (Dundas/Dufferin) (Please note that the gallery space is accessible only by stairs)

About Celina Bernardes
Celina Bernardes is a clinical psychologist and psychotherapist with over 20 years of experience in mental health. She graduated from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), where she also earned a Master’s degree in Psychoanalytic Theory, and later completed a Master’s degree in Social Work at the Université de Sherbrooke in Québec.
Her research focused on immigrant integration and the impact of the immigration process on mental health, exploring the challenges faced by those who leave their countries of origin and the communities that welcome them.
Since moving to Canada in 2007, Celina has worked in mental health in both Québec and Toronto, including supporting families of psychiatric patients and working with Francophone refugees. Today, she continues her work at the intersection of mental health and immigration at the Centre francophone du Grand Toronto and through her private practice, where she supports Brazilians living abroad.

Supporting independent cultural spaces
Underscore Projects is an independent, self-funded space, located in Little Portugal Toronto, created and run by Brazilians to bring art, creativity, and community together. Through exhibitions, workshops, performances, and other creative projects, we aim to create a welcoming space for artists and the wider community. Ticket sales and event revenue help cover the costs of keeping the space open and allow us to continue offering cultural and community programming throughout the year.
