João Herbert: Adotado e Deportado

Written by Wanja Campos da Nóbrega
Independently published (2024)

The true story of João Herbert, a boy adopted from an orphanage on the outskirts of São Paulo by an American family in small-town Ohio. Adoption did not give him American citizenship, and as a young adult he was imprisoned and deported to Brazil, a country whose language and culture he did not know. Diplomat Wanja Campos da Nóbrega, Consul General of Brazil in Toronto since 2020, shows the human side of diplomacy in a case that changed American law on who gets to be a citizen.
